Olmeca
Olmeca is a premium tequila that brings its vibrant energy to 80 countries around the world. It uses Weber Blue agave plants grown in volcanic soil for unrivalled flavour and quality – and it is perfect for a night out, a reunion with friends, sipped on its own, in shot-tails or mixed into simple and delicious long drinks.
Established over 50 years ago, Olmeca has produced a range of premium tequilas made from hand-selected agaves grown in the Mexican highlands of the Los Altos region of Jalisco. Olmeca Tequila is not your average spirit. This tequila has a fresh herbal and green pepper scent with soft citrus notes at the end. When you crack open a bottle of Olmeca, you’re not just pouring a drink – you’re unleashing a wave of unexpected experiences.
Following traditions for the purest expression of tequila, the agaves are slowly roasted in steel ovens, distilled in columns, and aged in vintage oak bourbon barrels. Olmeca has been part of Pernod Ricard since 2001 – and has brought the party to any celebration ever since.
Olmeca Tequila is a perfect reflection of Mexican culture – it’s bold, exuberant, lively, full of flavors, unexpected… and a bit loud
Following the myth
Olmeca’s name comes from the Olmecs – considered by many as the first major Mesoamerican civilization that lived in Mexico. The brand itself was created back in 1967 but this mythical lineage can still be felt in its logo, bottle design and visual identity.
Olmeca and the origin of tequila
Tequila’s history can be traced back to 1000 BC when the very first agave drinks were created at the time of the Olmec civilization. Coming from the fermentation of the agave plant, these drinks are known today as “Pulque”, a creamy liquor with a bit of a sour and yeasty taste – still widely popular today in Mexico but nothing like the tequila we know and love today.
Later, through time, many pre-Hispanic civilization played their part in the transformation of the Pulque liquor into Tequila, each making the taste and production methods evolve. And it is eventually shortly after the arrival of the Spaniards that the first known tequila distillery opened in Jalisco, in the early 1600s. What we can be sure of, is that the Olmecs certainly created the early origins of this drink – and they are still remembered for it today.
