What happened next: The sugar plants

During the 1890s, several sugar beet fields appeared in Sweden, mostly in the southernmost county of Skåne. At most, there were around 100 sugar mills in the country. Most of them were merged into Svenska Sockerfabriks AB (SSA) in 1907. In 1950, sugar was heavily rationed. When the Danish sugar manufacturer Danisco acquired SSA in 1992, there were only seven active sugar mills left in Sweden. Today, the only active sugar mill in the country is Örtofta mill in Eslöv.
