With a focus on corporate sustainability, renewable energy, and circular economy strategies, Marijose’s work is helping drive meaningful change across the tequila and mezcal world.

Can you briefly tell us about yourself and your role at the company?

My role mainly involves leading cross-functional projects, building strategic partnerships, and aligning sustainability goals with overall business performance.

I’m proudly Mexican-Spanish, but have lived all over the world, including Argentina, Brazil, the USA, Australia, and Mexico. Outside of work, I’m passionate about animals, especially horses.

How does the idea of conviviality manifest itself in the work environment at TAG?

Marijose Barona

For me, conviviality comes to life in every S&R moment and learning experience we organise. These events bring the team together in a relaxed setting, fostering community and collaboration. By combining social interaction with professional development, we create opportunities for the team to bond, share knowledge, and grow together.

I also make sure sustainability updates are part of every townhall to keep our goals top of mind, and regularly use internal channels to share engaging S&R achievements. Together, these efforts create an informed, inspired, and cohesive team with a shared commitment to S&R.

Can you tell us about an exciting project you have worked on recently?

There are two projects that really stand out for me. The first is the Sustainable Mezcal Alliance, a strategic collaboration we lead between companies and institutions in the sector. It’s all about protecting the industry and promoting sustainability.

The second is our work in exploring new circular systems where tequila and mezcal waste (like bagasse and vinasse) are transformed into usable applications.

What has been your proudest moment at TAG?

Becoming a trusted reference for S&R topics across teams is something I’m especially proud of. By inspiring and aligning our efforts, I’ve contributed significantly to our strategic roadmap. It has also been incredibly rewarding to organise impactful events and volunteering initiatives that give back to the community.

What’s your favourite cocktail, and do you have a personal twist on the recipe?

Definitely a Carajillo Mezcal. It’s a bold blend of rich coffee and smoky mezcal. Simple, but full of character.

Here’s how I make it:

I start with 30 ml of freshly brewed espresso and combine it in a shaker with 45 ml Del Maguey Mezcal, about 15 ml of simple syrup (or to taste) and ice. Shake it well, then strain into a chilled glass over fresh ice. For a finishing touch, I garnish it with a few coffee beans, they add a nice aromatic accent to the cocktail.
