Our 2030 goal: Carbon neutrality and sustainable agriculture

Keeping in mind that distillation by nature is an energy-intensive activity, we are very proud to be able to say that our distillery in Åhus is known as one of the most climate and energy-efficient in the world, with an energy consumption per liter of alcohol distilled at 60 percent less than that of the average distillery. Nonetheless, we have made a commitment to make a carbon-neutral product and that all wheat purchased to produce Absolut Vodka is covered by a sustainability certification by the year 2030.

We are constantly updating our cultivation concept to be in line with the current best practices in terms of quality and sustainability, and are engaged in field trials in collaboration with a local agricultural organization, and research with the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, SLU. The latest updated concept will be implemented in 2022, aiming towards our goal that all wheat purchased to produce Absolut Vodka is covered by a sustainability certification by 2030.

Another important goal is to make Absolut Vodka a fully carbon-neutral product by 2030. The first step in this is to reduce the climate impact from wheat production by 10 percent leading up to the year 2025.

Another important goal is to make Absolut Vodka a fully carbon-neutral product by 2030. The first step in this is to reduce the climate impact from wheat production by 10 percent leading up to the year 2025. This step includes requirements for our associated wheat farmers regarding the use of Best Available Technology (BAT) fertilizers, climate-smart fertilizers that have a significantly reduced carbon footprint. In 2018, nearly 80 percent of the wheat we purchased was grown using BAT-fertilizers. By 2025, we aim to increase that number to 100 percent.
