The Espresso Martony: the ultimate indulgent treat that you can sip and eat
Fresh from creating the ‘schneaky’ Espresso Martini glass – to disguise the dark cocktail with its frothy top as a pint of stout, Kahlúa has teamed up with Tony’s Chocolonely to create an espresso martini glass made entirely of milk chocolate for the launch of the Espresso Martony!

We sat down with Mat Banach, Senior Brand Manager Global Comms & Content Malibu & Kahlúa to indulge us some more on this unique collaboration.
How did the collaboration with Tony Chocoloney happen?
Indulgence is in our and Tony’s Chocolonely DNA, while coffee and chocolate are a great combination – the bitterness of coffee and the sweetness of chocolate complement each other perfectly. Our collaboration is a match made in heaven – we share a cheeky tone of voice and both have a bold identity; we don’t compromise on our images. We also have a strong commitment to our suppliers. Kahlúa has its Coffee for Good programme, which aims to tackle the risks coffee farms face to help cultivate a long-term future for coffee farmers, while Tony’s Chocolonely has its Open Chain commitment to ensure that all cocoa beans are fully traceable from farm to bar. So, we simply contacted Tony’s Chocolonely to see if they were interested in doing a collaboration or licensing project with us and that’s when the fun began!

Tell us about the creative idea behind the Espresso Martony.
With the help of Wieden + Kennedy, we began looking for a fun creative idea that would appeal to consumers. We looked to come up with the definitive treat for coffee and chocolate lovers and that’s how we landed at the Espresso Martony in a glass made of chocolate. It’s the ultimate indulgence treat that you can sip, eat or both! Not only does it taste good, but it is also doing some good because we both have social responsibility at our cores through our Coffee for Good project and Tony’s Chocolonely with its Open Chain initiative.
Our collaboration is a match made in heaven.
What does the activation entail?
The activation starts on 14 April securing strong visibility through digital channels with many content creators and influencers such as sustainable chef influencer Lagom Chef starring in a cheeky film. Some lucky consumers will also be given the chance to try our delicious espresso martini in an Espresso Martony chocolate glass in Dirty Martini’s cocktail bar in Bishopsgate, London. It’s first come, first served as we have a limited number of Espresso Martony glasses; when the glasses run out, drinkers will get a free Tony’s Chocolonely chocolate bar when they buy an espresso martini. Some of the proceeds will be donated to Fondo Para La Paz, the NGO we work with in Mexico for our Coffee for Good programme and to Tony’s Chocolonely Open Chain commitment.
Check out all the activations here.
